Pillar 4

Gender Equality & Leadership

Gender equality is not a project — it's the foundation under every other project. BFFS works in the rooms where policy is written, and on the mats where public opinion is shaped.

Our approach

What we actually do.

  • Public participation training for women and young people
  • Co-authored the Samburu Youth Manifesto (2017)
  • Seat on the county gender policy technical working group
  • Advocacy campaigns against harmful cultural practices
  • Leadership pipeline for young Samburu women

Activities in detail.

Policy engagement

BFFS sits on the county gender policy technical working group and reviews draft legislation. Where we find gaps, we organise to close them.

Samburu Youth Manifesto

We co-authored the 2017 manifesto and continue to use it as a tool for holding leaders accountable at every election and budget cycle.

Public participation

We train women and young people on how to show up at county budget hearings, on the law that backs their right to speak, and on how to follow up afterwards.

Advocacy campaigns

Radio, community forums and social media work against FGM, early marriage and the Moranism practice — always in partnership with elders willing to lead the change.
